Sony is implementing some major changes to its PlayStation Stars loyalty program, with the most significant adjustment being the removal of subscription payments from the points-earning system. Starting March 1 next year, players will no longer earn reward points when purchasing or renewing subscriptions like PlayStation Plus or EA Play.
This adjustment arrives alongside another noteworthy change that's already in effect: a reduced expiration window for PlayStation Stars points. As of October 24 this year, newly earned points will expire after 12 months plus the remainder of the month in which they were earned, cutting the previous expiration period in half. Points acquired before this date will retain their original 24-month expiration timeline.
PlayStation Stars, which launched in late 2022, has been a way for players to earn rewards through both store purchases and in-app quest completion. The program allows members to collect digital collectibles and earn points that can be exchanged for PSN credit and other items.
The upcoming changes specifically target the "eligible purchases" definition within the program. While players can still earn points through regular game purchases on the PlayStation Store and by completing various campaigns, the exclusion of subscription payments means a reduction in point-earning opportunities.
Both these changes follow Sony's ongoing refinement of its loyalty program, which has been exclusively available through the PlayStation App since its inception. The company had previously expressed intentions to expand the service to consoles, though the timeline for this expansion remains unclear.
