A new mod for Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 addresses one of the game's most frustrating multiplayer limitations, allowing players to finally break free from mandatory class diversity in co-op missions. The Astartes Overhaul mod, created by modder Tom (Warhammer Workshop), removes the requirement that each three-player Operations squad must consist of different Space Marine classes.
Since the game's successful September launch, players have struggled with an awkward pre-mission standoff where teammates often compete to play their preferred class. The current system forces players to negotiate who will switch characters before a mission can begin, even when matchmaking sometimes groups players with identical class selections.
While developer Saber Interactive has indicated it is working on improved class matching, this comprehensive mod already offers a solution. Focus Entertainment, the game's publisher, has confirmed to IGN that they have no objections to PvE modding, though the mod's creator recommends using private lobbies to avoid disrupting other players' experiences.
The Astartes Overhaul mod goes well beyond just removing class restrictions. It introduces allied reinforcements including Imperial Guard and Dreadnoughts, adds new Chapter emblems, expands weapon options, and rebalances existing weapons to better match Warhammer 40K lore. The mod even includes cosmetics inspired by the popular Astartes fan films, which Saber's creative director Oliver Hollis-Leick previously cited as a key influence on the game's Space Marine animations and sound design.
Players using the mod can even access customization options and equipment combinations not normally available, with these changes visible to other players in public sessions due to the game's client-side architecture. The mod also introduces new enemy types, checkpoint systems, and takedown animations, significantly expanding on the base game's content.
