Square Enix has partnered with Tencent division Lightspeed Studios to develop Final Fantasy XIV Mobile, a free-to-play smartphone adaptation of its successful MMORPG. According to Famitsu, the game will not include gacha mechanics.
"It has been 11 years since FFXIV 2.0: A Realm Reborn launched, and this new mobile game will be a sister to FFXIV, aiming to recreate the grandeur of the original's story and combat mechanics on mobile devices," said Final Fantasy XIV producer and director Naoki Yoshida, in an official announcement.
The mobile version will include the original story content, combat systems, and non-combat activities such as crafting, gathering, fishing, Chocobo racing, and the Triple Triad card game. The social aspects will also carry over to mobile, with systems designed for voluntary player interaction in both casual activities and group content.
Square Enix confirmed the mobile version will incorporate the detailed visual elements that characterize the original game, as the official announcement states the development team has optimized character models and environmental designs for smaller screens while maintaining visual fidelity.
Initial playtesting will begin in China soon, followed by a global release at a later unannounced date. Square Enix has not revealed details about potential cross-progression features or expansion content availability.
