20th Century Studios president Steve Asbell confirmed that a new Planet of the Apes film will be released in 2027. The announcement follows Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes' $395 million global box office performance.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, which is directed by Wes Ball, stars Owen Teague as Noa, Freya Allan as Nova/Mae, Kevin Durand as Proximus Caesar, and William H. Macy as Trevathan. None of the previous trilogy's cast returned in the 2024 film.
There’s no certainty, however, that Ball will return as the director in the upcoming film. He is currently attached to direct the live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda, Mouse Guard, and an adaptation of the cyberpunk shooter video game Ruiner. Ball previously directed the Maze Runner trilogy from 2014 to 2018 before taking on Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.
The Planet of the Apes franchise is one of four major IPs that will shape 20th Century Studios' upcoming slate. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Asbell outlined Avatar, Alien, and Predator as the other key franchises. The studio plans to establish their schedule for these properties before considering original films.
For now, the studio is developing two Predator films for 2025, including Predator: Badlands, which is scheduled to release on November 7 next year, replacing the delayed Blade reboot. They are also working on a sequel to Alien: Romulus with director Fede Alvarez, focusing on the characters Rain and Andy, played by Cailee Spaeny and David Jonsson.
No additional details about the cast, creative team, or plot for the new Planet of the Apes film have been announced.
